I will be releasing a new version of “Ambiguous Mess” in November. I need to make it mine. I worked with a producer on the demo version, and because of this, I lack full rights to the song. I promise to give it all the grit and angst that it deserves and to get it out of my system once and for all.

For October, I will be releasing a new track called “Broken Man“. Here is a behind the scenes peek at the work in progress:

I knew this song needed to be dynamic – capturing the quietness of breath and the raging fury of battle. It needed to build and break. And it needed to resolve with hope. The song builds slowly but surely – the introduction comes in quietly with piano; the verse fills with vocals, violin, and cello; the pre-chorus introduces the guitars, bass guitar, and percussion; and the chorus drives with distorted guitars, punches with staccato cello, and soars with vibrant violin. Finally, the instrumentation drops out after the last chorus, bringing the song back to soft vocals, simple piano, and a few flourishes of acoustic guitar, ending with a D major chord making a Picardy third.

For October, I will be releasing a new track called “Broken Man“. Here is a behind the scenes peek at the work in progress:

Most of my songs start at the piano. This one started with the lyrics. These came from my sister, who has made a habit of leaving these on my music stand to prod me into songwriting. Admittedly, sometimes it works.

It actually took me a few readings to realize that this was meant to be a love song. The lyrics speak so poignantly about the scars of battle – of anger and anguish, of coldness and callousness, of estrangement and despair, that they felt hopeless – more requiem than revival. But despite all of that darkness, this is not a story of lament but a story of love and its power to heal even the most wounded soul.

Here is the sketch for a new song called “Masquerade”. This one might be my theme song. It certainly fits as an indie anthem. Or an epic soundtrack. Click here to download the demo. Please note that this is only a sketch and that we still need to arrange the parts and record them with real instruments.

I will be releasing a new single every month in the lead up to the official release of the album. For September, it’s a modern rock song called “Now or Never” – a powerful mix of overdriven guitars, grooving bass, haunting piano, soaring ebow, and strong and ethereal vocals.  This one has Mick Taras on guitar, Drew Allsbrook on bass guitar, Jervy Hou on piano, and John Ferraro on drums.

I will be releasing a new single every month in the lead up to the official release of the album. For August, I’m trying out some indie rock with “Puppet Master“. I’ve been enjoying the upbeat tempo and quirky vibe ;) This one has Jervy Hou on piano and keyboard, Mick Taras on guitar, Justin Morales on bass guitar, and John Ferraro on drums.
