It took a few tries, but I finally managed to get ahold of a copy of the live recording from the Jazz Composers Concert held on May 7, 2011 at the McKinney Theatre at Saddleback College. I’ve uploaded an excerpt from my final project for Jazz Composition and Arrangement with Joey Sellers. “Black and White” contrasts the simplicity of solo performance against the complexity of syncopated rhythms; it includes parts for the piano, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, bass, and drums. This excerpt is from the second half of the piece and it includes the blowing section for the tenor sax, the blowing section for the piano, the B section, the A section, and the coda. (A blowing section is where a single musician performs an improvisation over the chord structure.) The piece was performed by the Saddleback Jazz Faculty and recorded by Kevin Mowry. I hope you enjoy my first foray into the art of jazz!

Also, if you are interested in playing it yourself, I have scans of the sheet music with parts for piano, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, bass, and drums.

As the last of the album, “Home” is a bit of a departure from my standard fare; I wanted end with something warm, bright, and happy :) This one has Mick Taras on guitar, Mike Troolines on bass guitar, and John Ferraro on drums.

I will be releasing a new single every month in the lead up to the official release of the album. For February, I have a new release called “Russian Roulette” – a hard hitting rock anthem that crosses the imagery of the Western duel, a deadly game of skill, and Russian Roulette, a deadly game of luck. So live for the moment, because “when you live by the gun, you’re either dead or alive”. And always remember that “you can never play dice with the devil and win”. This one has Jervy Hou on piano, Mick Taras on guitar, Drew Allsbrook on bass guitar, and John Ferraro on drums.
